What Is Snow Mushroom?
Snow Mushroom Benefits for Skin: What the Research Shows
1. Deep Skin Hydration and Barrier Function
Wójciak M, et al. (2023). Optimization of cosmetic formulation containing Tremella fuciformis extract. Cosmetics, 10(3), 82.
Lourith N, et al. (2021). Formulation and efficacy of snow mushroom hand sanitizer. J Cosmet Dermatol, 20(2), 554–560.
2. Photoprotection Against UV Damage
Important: TFPS does not replace sunscreen. It supports the skin’s endogenous antioxidant defenses against incidental UV exposure.
Fu H, et al. (2021). Tremella fuciformis polysaccharides inhibit UVA-induced photodamage of human dermal fibroblast cells. J Cosmet Dermatol, 20(12), 4052–4059.
Wen L, et al. (2016). Effect of TFPS on UV-induced photoaging. J Funct Foods, 20, 400–410.
3. Anti-Aging Through SIRT1 Activation
Shen T, et al. (2017). Tremella fuciformis polysaccharide suppresses hydrogen peroxide-triggered injury of human skin fibroblasts via upregulation of SIRT1. Mol Med Rep, 16(2), 1340–1346.
4. Wound Healing and Cell Migration
Chiang JH, et al. (2022). Tremella fuciformis inhibits melanogenesis and promotes migration of fibroblasts and keratinocytes. In Vivo, 36(2), 713–722.
5. Hyperpigmentation and Melanogenesis Reduction
6. Atopic Dermatitis Support
Yang R, et al. (2022). TFPS alleviates atopic dermatitis via immune response and gut microbiota. Front Pharmacol, 13, 944801.
Snow Mushroom vs. Hyaluronic Acid: How Do They Compare?
| Factor | Snow Mushroom (TFPS) | Hyaluronic Acid |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Fungal (plant-derived) | Typically bacterial fermentation or animal-derived |
| Molecular Size | Tunable — low-MW fractions (1,000–10,000 Da) penetrate deeper | Variable — low-MW HA available but less common in consumer products |
| Water Retention | Up to ~500x polysaccharide weight (varies by fraction) | Up to ~1,000x its weight (well-documented) |
| Additional Benefits | Antioxidant, SIRT1 activation, anti-melanogenic, wound healing | Primarily hydration; limited antioxidant activity |
| Skin Feel | Light, non-greasy, fast-absorbing | Can feel tacky at higher concentrations |
| Vegan Status | Yes | Depends on source |
Note: At matched low concentrations, TFPS has shown comparable or superior moisture retention to HA in preliminary in vitro and in vivo work. A 2025 study directly compared TFPS, T. mesenterica polysaccharide, and HA in vitro for moisturizing potential. However, large-scale head-to-head clinical trials are still lacking.
Why We Chose Shu Hong™ Balanced Skin Toner
Shu Hong Red Relief Balanced Skin Toner
Highest Active Botanical Concentration
Tremella Preserved, Not Destroyed
Full TCM Herb Formula
- Ku Shen (Sophora Root) — Clears heat and damp-heat; antibacterial, antifungal. Foundational across all three Shu Hong formulas.
- Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle Flower) — Clears heat-toxin; reduces redness and surface inflammation.
- Pu Gong Ying (Dandelion) — Addresses the liver-skin connection; effective for hormonal and stress-related breakouts.
- Astragalus (Huang Qi) — Strengthens the skin’s defensive (wei qi) layer; long-term barrier resilience.
- Bai Shao (White Peony Root) — Nourishes blood and yin at the skin surface; reduces reactivity and hypersensitivity.
- Gan Cao (Licorice Root) — Harmonizes the formula; reduces irritation; synergist that enhances the other herbs.
Clean Preservation
pH Balanced for Your Skin
Balanced Is Phase 1 — The System Goes Deeper
- Shu Hong Flare Control (Phase 2) — For active rashes, oozing lesions, itching, and damp-heat flares. More drying and aggressive than Balanced — used on problem areas only during active outbreaks.
- Shu Hong Fire Control (Phase 3) — For deep burning, nerve-level irritation, chronic treatment-resistant conditions, and psoriasis. Highest alcohol content for deepest penetration. No expiration date.
Who Should Consider Shu Hong Balanced?
- Anyone looking for a daily toner that hydrates without heaviness or greasiness
- People with reactive skin who flare up from conventional lotions and moisturizers
- Those managing eczema or psoriasis who need daily barrier maintenance between flares
- People dealing with hormonal acne or stress-related breakouts
- Anyone interested in TCM-rooted skin care that prioritizes ingredient integrity over marketing
- Those looking for a plant-based alternative to synthetic hyaluronic acid serums
- People who want one product to replace both toner and light moisturizer

What the Research Does and Does Not Tell Us
- Most TFPS skin research is preclinical — in vitro fibroblast or murine models. Few randomized controlled human trials exist with topical TFPS as a sole active.
- Long-term safety data is limited to traditional dietary use. Formal cosmetic safety data exists but is sparse.
- Variability in extract preparation (molecular weight, purity) makes cross-study comparison difficult.
- The “500x its weight in water” claim varies significantly by fraction and source. It is a useful benchmark, not a universal constant.
